What is The Difference Between Silicone Overmolding and Doubt-shot Molding?
Silicone overmolding and doubt shot molding are two silicone molding technologies widely applied in custom silicone products & parts. The two silicone molding technologies are complex and difficult to operate and grasp because they need to obey strict tolerance. Silicone overmolding is done with a normal injection molding machine, and then take out the first forming products, and add another injection molding machine. The Double Shot Molding is completed by a Double color injection Molding machine, a molding that can have two kinds of color effects and different materials. Here, we will discuss double-shot molding and the difference between the two silicone molding and their advantages.
I. Silicone Overmolding
Silicone overmolding is the silicone rubber material forming sheet, and plastic parts, such as tubing and plate shape. In general, the substrate material (the first block to bonding with other materials) is into the injection mold, then coating forms around within the material into the substrate or substrates. In the coagulation of cladding material, the two materials together will be a component. Through adding texture, and color, and merging the functional components necessary to add the coating forming to change one or product surface. Other advantages include:
👉 The design of the enhanced flexibility and material components.
👉Reduce the secondary operation;
👉 Assembly and labor costs. The improved parts' strength and structure.
II. Double shot molding
What is doubt-shot molding? Double shot molding is a special process that uses silicone sulfide to create excellent sealing silicone parts. The process involves two independent but important developmental processes.
1. Process of doubt shot molding
In doubt shot molding, thermoplastic, and silicone materials are injected into the same mold and molded in one cycle. These materials will be formed after curing.
- The first injection will form a thermoplastic assembly.
- The second injection will coat the LSR or rubber onto the thermoplastic assembly. In the second injection, the LSR sealing parts will be molded.
2. What is LSR molding
LSR(liquid silicone rubber) is a high-purity silicone sulfide with low compression deformation, high stability, and excellent tolerance to extreme temperatures. These properties make LSR an ideal material for component production because any problems related to material quality can be avoided.
Doubt shot molding is particularly important for any application that requires sealed connectors. Without molding technology, creating a similar case would require more tooling and assembly processes, increasing costs and the potential for assembly errors.
The doubt-shot molding process can expand the design options, allowing the opportunity to design better products. LSR materials have excellent weather resistance, chemical resistance, and flame retardant properties that far exceed those of typical sealing materials used in other applications. The wider range of temperatures available for the two-shot molding (-90 to +200C˚) can therefore be used as a major manufacturing strategy to make this excellent sealing product stand out relative to others on the market.
Double shot molding is a complex, more ideal technology for materials, and multi-color products, especially in mass production. Other advantages include:
🙌Unit cost is lower.
🙌Reduce the cost related to assembly defects.
🙌Improve the quality of products.
